I couldn't agree with you more especially when I see our HR team going around with an 'employee survey' form to figure out what could be a good gift during New Year. I think I should ask my HR team to follow this thread of conversation for some innovative ideas from all of you.
Personally I think this year's corporate gifting campaign across organizations will be a damp squib what with cost cutting and a poor economy! Having said that, it will be imperative for the concerned dept to exercise caution while deciding on the gift. The gift should add some value to the receiver. How about electronic gadgets? There are some interesting stuff in the market and they would make excellent corporate gifts.

Yes, I agree with Jimmy... the right electronic gift can definitely hit the spot with the employees. There are quite a few gifts that can commonly satisfy all age groups, sexes and interests.. namely, watches, portable music players, clocks, etc.
Just a question of choosing the perfect one.

Gifting ideas has been my worry for some time now and I know what i would like to receive but never quite sure if those might be the right gifts for others too... Anyhow, I have kind off addressed this problem for this year by going for the most popular gadget like the iPod and digicams etc..I have incidentally found the iPods more popular. Dont know if I can get these at a reasonable rate from the company directly..will give you the info if I am in for some luck..Best of Luck
